India lifts 41.5 crore people out of poverty in 15 years: UN praise

Washington: In the 15 years from 2005 to 2021, around 41.5 crore people have been lifted out of poverty in India. However, according to the UN report, India is the first country with the highest number of poor people in the world. The Multidimensional Poverty Index was released yesterday by the United Nations Development Program and Oxford University’s OPHI. According to this, in the 15-year period from 2005-2006 to 2019-2021, about 41.5 crore people have been lifted out of poverty in India. The United Nations has described this as a historic change.

Based on India’s 2020 population data, India is the country with the highest number of poor people in the world. There are 22.89 crore poor people in India. This is followed by Nigeria with 9.67 crore poor people. India still has the highest number of poor children in the world despite poverty reduction. As of 2019, there are still 9.7 crore poor children in India. 9.7 crore children or 21.8 percent of children aged 0-17 are poor. This is more than the total number of poor, children and adults in any other country globally under the Multidimensional Poverty Index.
