Nebraska’s Food Bank: A $37 Million Solution to Unforeseen Demand

In a remarkable response to the surging need for food assistance across the 93 counties it serves, the Food Bank for the Heartland in Nebraska has embarked on an extraordinary mission. The nonprofit organization, faced with unprecedented challenges, is taking bold steps to ensure that no one goes hungry.

A New Beginning

The ceremonial groundbreaking on Sunday marked the start of a $37 million project that will redefine the way the Food Bank for the Heartland operates. The plan involves constructing a state-of-the-art office and warehouse complex on a sprawling 12-acre campus at the northeast corner of 84th and L Streets in Omaha. This new facility, encompassing 105,000 square feet, is a beacon of hope for those struggling with food insecurity.

Transforming 84th and L

The future headquarters will be approximately 40% larger than the current facility, providing ample space for storage, distribution, and community engagement. With nearly double the parking stalls, the new base will accommodate approximately 170 spots, ensuring smoother logistics for volunteers, semitrailer truck drivers, and visitors.

The heart of this transformation lies in the emphasis on healthy foods. Brian Barks, CEO and president of the Food Bank for the Heartland, expressed his vision: “Our project is going to transform 84th and L. It’s going to transform the way we do business and the way we are able to serve the community.”

A Community Effort

While planning began in 2020, the nonprofit’s governing board strategically delayed the building and relocation announcement until securing 60% of the $27 million needed through philanthropic donations. Approximately $10 million will come from internal sources and the sale of the existing building at 10525 J St. The capital campaign continues to seek community contributions.

Demolition and construction work are set to kick off this summer, with the projected move-in date in 2026. As Nebraskans’ demand for food assistance grows, this milestone represents a commitment to nourishing communities and fostering resilience.
