BNSF Railway Confirms Derailment of Train Carrying Corn Syrup in Arizona

BNSF Railway, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, confirmed on Thursday that a train carrying corn syrup derailed near Topock in western Arizona, close to the California border. The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 7:40 p.m. (0240 GMT), with approximately eight train cars derailing. The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation, according to BNSF. However, the company stated that there were no injuries resulting from the derailment, and preliminary reports indicated that there were no hazardous materials involved.

No Hazardous Materials Involved

Earlier media reports had indicated that the freight train that derailed in western Arizona was carrying hazardous materials, but BNSF Railway confirmed that this was not the case. The derailment of a freight train operated by Norfolk Southern in February released over a million gallons of hazardous materials and pollutants into the environment around the town of East Palestine in Ohio. This prompted a lawsuit from the state and probes from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

BNSF Railway operates railroad networks across North America and three Canadian provinces. The company has been under scrutiny since the derailment of a train carrying hazardous materials in February. While the company has confirmed that no hazardous materials were involved in the recent incident, the derailment will be thoroughly investigated to determine the cause of the incident and whether any safety protocols were breached.
