Donald Trump Sworn in as the 47th President of the United States

Inaugural Ceremony Marks Trump’s Historic Political Comeback

On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump took the oath of office for the second time during an inauguration ceremony held in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. This marks the culmination of a remarkable political comeback for Trump, who was distanced by many Republicans following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack but regained widespread support during his third bid for the presidency.

Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance of Ohio, was sworn in as Vice President. The ceremony was initially scheduled to take place outside on the Capitol terrace overlooking the National Mall, but due to freezing temperatures, the location was moved indoors, making it the first such inauguration held in the rotunda since Ronald Reagan’s second term in 1985.

Trump’s Inaugural Address

During his inaugural address, Trump expressed his disbelief at the success of his comeback, saying, “Many people thought it was impossible for me to stage such a historic political comeback. But as you see today, here I am — the American people have spoken.” He outlined plans for several executive orders, including ones focusing on immigration, energy, and national security.

Trump vowed to declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and announced an immediate halt to all illegal immigration. “As commander in chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is exactly what I am going to do,” Trump stated, to a standing ovation from the crowd.

Election Results

Trump defeated Democratic nominee, former Vice President Kamala Harris, in the November 2024 election. He won 312 Electoral College votes to Harris’ 226, and secured 77.3 million popular votes (49.9%) compared to Harris’ 75 million (48.4%).

Harris, along with her husband, Doug Emhoff, attended the inaugural ceremony as part of the transition of power.

Inaugural Guests and Audience

Among the distinguished guests at the ceremony were tech billionaires Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, as well as top government officials. Those unable to fit inside the Capitol rotunda watched the proceedings on large screens in the Capitol Visitor Center or at the nearby Capital One Arena.
