Gov. Lee’s Commitment to Deportation Plan Sparks Backlash
The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), based in Nashville, condemned Governor Bill Lee’s recent commitment to support President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport over 11 million undocumented immigrants. On December 16, 2024, the group issued a strong statement decrying Lee’s support for Trump’s pledge, which was shared in a letter signed by 25 Republican governors.
Lee’s commitment to utilizing “every tool at our disposal,” including state law enforcement and the National Guard, to assist with mass deportations has drawn widespread criticism. TIRRC Executive Director Lisa Sherman-Luna expressed concern that such a measure would cause immense harm to families, communities, and Tennessee’s economy.
TIRRC’s Opposition to Mass Deportations
Sherman-Luna called Trump’s deportation plan “disastrous,” citing opposition from business leaders, economists, faith groups, and legal experts. She argued that the proposal would instill fear within immigrant communities and harm the state’s social fabric. According to TIRRC, Tennessee’s immigrant population, which constitutes 6.1% of the state’s residents, plays a vital role in strengthening communities and bolstering the economy.
Sherman-Luna emphasized that rounding up families and deporting undocumented immigrants would have devastating economic consequences. “Crippling our businesses and agriculture” would only exacerbate the state’s challenges, she argued. Instead of allocating resources to mass deportations, she proposed that the state invest in housing, healthcare, and education for working families.
State and National Implications
Gov. Lee’s stance, in line with Trump’s broader immigration agenda, suggests a heightened role for state resources in federal immigration enforcement. TIRRC voiced concern over the potential use of local law enforcement and the National Guard to detain individuals, warning that this could overstep jurisdictional boundaries and set a dangerous precedent for civil rights.
The debate over immigration policy continues to divide the country, and in Tennessee, the immigrant community remains particularly vulnerable. Many fear that Governor Lee’s actions will escalate tensions and lead to unnecessary suffering among Tennessee’s immigrant population.
Background on TIRRC
Founded in 2003, TIRRC is a nonprofit advocacy group that works to create a more inclusive Tennessee for immigrants and refugees. With over 6% of the state’s population being foreign-born, the group represents a significant portion of the population that faces increasing uncertainty amid shifting political landscapes. TIRRC continues to advocate for policies that protect immigrant families, promote social justice, and ensure that all Tennesseans can live and work without fear.
