Sri Lanka’s Electricity Consumption Charges Rise: People Demand Dissolution of Ranil Wickramasinghe’s Government

Colombo: In Sri Lanka, the electricity tariffs have been drastically increased, and the people have intensified their agitation demanding the dissolution of the interim government and the holding of general elections. In Sri Lanka, which is stuck in economic crisis, the country’s government has drastically increased the electricity consumption tariff. A family consumes 30 units of electricity per month due to a 75% increase in tariff per unit. Now 198 rupees have to be paid extra. This price hike has been implemented from today.

The increase in electricity tariffs has now added to the burden on the people of Sri Lanka, who are already suffering from shortages of fuel, essential commodities and rising prices. In this case, the public and workers in Sri Lanka have intensified their protest demanding that the interim government should be dissolved and general elections should be held immediately. A large number of youths participated in a huge rally held in Colombo and shouted slogans demanding immediate elections.

People have accused President Ranil Wickremesinghe of trying to bring him back to Sri Lanka and give him full protection when various countries have refused to give asylum to the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa who fled from Colombo. The people of Sri Lanka also insisted that the current caretaker government led by Ranil should be dissolved and parliamentary elections should be held immediately. People have also said that if their demands are not accepted, the protests will be intensified across the country.
