Two prominent figures in the Indian business landscape, Mayank Kumar and Ayush Mathur, have launched a new platform aimed at solving labor shortages in sectors facing a growing need for skilled workers. The new venture, BorderPlus, will start by addressing gaps in Germany’s healthcare industry, with aspirations to expand across multiple sectors globally.
Kumar, the co-founder of upGrad, and Mathur, a former senior leader at OYO, have teamed up to tackle an urgent problem: connecting blue-collar workers with global job opportunities. Their mission is to create a seamless link between workers, particularly in India, and roles in countries that are struggling to fill positions in critical sectors.
Tackling the Healthcare Labor Shortage
The initial focus of BorderPlus is the healthcare sector in Germany, where labor shortages, especially in fields like housekeeping and nursing, have been a persistent issue. Mathur, who served as the President of OYO Europe, saw the magnitude of this problem firsthand. During his time at OYO, he frequently encountered gaps in the labor force, especially in Denmark and Germany, and this spurred his interest in creating a solution.
“The shortage of labor in various countries is a serious problem,” Mathur explains. “Germany’s healthcare sector, in particular, has faced immense challenges, and we believe BorderPlus can help address these gaps by connecting Indian workers with these high-demand roles.”
Germany’s aging population is putting additional strain on its healthcare system, making it a prime focus for the launch of BorderPlus. This platform will not only help meet immediate needs but also facilitate a long-term solution by providing a steady stream of skilled workers trained specifically for these roles.
Expanding to Other Sectors and Countries
While BorderPlus is starting in the healthcare sector, the platform has bigger ambitions. Over time, the company plans to diversify into other high-demand industries, including hospitality, retail, teaching, construction, logistics, and trucking. The company has identified several countries that face similar challenges as Germany, and they plan to expand into these markets gradually.
Mathur highlights that the labor shortage is a global issue, and BorderPlus is designed to bridge these gaps by offering comprehensive training programs to workers in India. These workers will be equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in foreign job markets, from technical expertise to language proficiency.
“The world is facing a shortage of labor in key industries,” says Mathur. “Our platform aims to address this gap by providing workers with not just jobs but also the skills they need to succeed in international markets.”
The Role of Training: Building Skills for Global Jobs
One of the cornerstones of BorderPlus is its training program. The platform aims to provide candidates with a thorough and structured path toward employment. Each training program will last between 6 and 9 months, offering flexible options for participants, including online, blended, and offline formats.
The final phase of the program will be offline, with a strong focus on language learning to ensure candidates are prepared for the cultural and linguistic challenges they may face while working abroad. To aid in language acquisition, BorderPlus is also developing an AI-powered conversational bot that will use OpenAI’s technology to simulate real-life interactions. This will allow workers to practice spoken language and refine their communication skills before heading to their new roles.
The training centers will be located in major cities across India, with the first batch already running in Pune. Another center is set to open in Mumbai, and the company plans to establish additional locations across the country to meet growing demand. These centers will act as hubs where workers can undergo the final stages of their training, with a strong emphasis on language proficiency and cultural readiness.
Looking Ahead: Scaling Quickly
BorderPlus is starting with a small pilot program, enrolling just 10 candidates. However, the company plans to scale quickly, offering monthly training batches as they expand. With high demand for workers in various industries globally, the platform is primed to grow rapidly and meet the needs of employers abroad.
The team behind BorderPlus is not new to the challenges of scaling businesses. Kumar, who stepped down from his operational role as managing director at upGrad, remains deeply involved in the strategic direction of the company. His experience in the edtech space is expected to play a key role in shaping the growth and success of BorderPlus.
