Julia Goldberg, a seasoned journalist from New Mexico, has been appointed editor-in-chief of Source New Mexico. Goldberg, who brings over three decades of experience to the role, takes over following a nationwide search.
A Storied Career in Journalism
Goldberg’s extensive career in journalism includes serving as the editor and publisher of the Santa Fe Reporter, a respected alt-weekly newspaper in the state. Under her leadership, the publication won numerous awards, becoming a cornerstone of local journalism. Goldberg has not only led publications but has also contributed to national outlets like the New York Times and Salon, covering various topics with her keen journalistic insight.
In addition to her role at the Santa Fe Reporter, Goldberg has written for other New Mexico-based publications, such as the Rio Grande Sun, further cementing her reputation as a trusted voice in the state’s media landscape. She was deeply involved in journalism education as well, having served as a faculty member at the now-closed Santa Fe University of Art and Design. There, she developed the curriculum for the creative writing department’s journalism program and mentored students through the university’s weekly student magazine.
Her commitment to journalism extends beyond reporting and editing; she’s also an author, having penned Inside Story: Everyone’s Guide to Reporting and Writing Creative Nonfiction, a resource for aspiring journalists. Goldberg’s leadership experience includes serving as president of the New Mexico Fund for Public Interest Journalism and holding the editorial chair for the Association of Alternative News Media.
A New Chapter at Source New Mexico
Goldberg’s appointment as editor of Source New Mexico marks a significant milestone for the publication. Source NM, which launched in August 2021, has quickly gained recognition for its commitment to covering state news and issues that matter to New Mexicans. The organization is part of States Newsroom, a national network of nonprofit news organizations dedicated to providing in-depth state-level reporting.
Adam Kealoha Causey, national editor at States Newsroom, expressed confidence in Goldberg’s ability to lead the team. “We’re so glad to have someone with the type of vision and experience Julia has leading our team from Santa Fe,” he said. With Goldberg at the helm, Source New Mexico is poised to continue its growth and impact in New Mexico journalism.
Goldberg succeeds Shaun Griswold, who served as the publication’s editor before stepping down in early October 2024. Her appointment brings a wealth of experience and a strong vision for the future, particularly in enhancing Source New Mexico’s mission to serve the public interest through insightful and responsible reporting.
Looking Ahead
Goldberg has expressed excitement about the opportunities ahead, noting her honor in joining the talented journalists at Source New Mexico. “I’m honored to join the award-winning journalists at Source, and excited for the stories we’re going to tell in the year ahead,” she said. As the publication looks to expand its coverage and deepen its connection with the community, Goldberg’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping its future.
