Liz Truss appointed as UK’s new Prime Minister: Queen Elizabeth congratulates

LONDON: The election comes as UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently resigned as Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader. In the final vote, Indian-origin former finance minister Rishi Sunak received 60,399 votes and foreign minister Liz Truss received 81,326 votes. With this, Liz Truss was chosen as the leader of the Conservative Party and the country’s new Prime Minister.

Following this, Boris Johnson resigned from his post yesterday. After leaving the Prime Minister’s official residence in London, he met Queen Elizabeth II, 96, at Scotland’s Balmoral Palace and handed in his resignation letter. Subsequently, Queen Elizabeth appointed Truss as the new Prime Minister. After that, Truss met Queen Elizabeth in person and congratulated her. The Queen then formally insisted that a new cabinet be headed by Truss. Truss is the 15th Prime Minister of England to take office during Queen Elizabeth’s lifetime.
