Former Omaha Lobbyist Jack Cheloha Appointed Ralston City Administrator

Ralston, Nebraska, has named Jack Cheloha, a former Omaha lobbyist and senior attorney, as its new city administrator. With years of public service experience, Cheloha is stepping into the role with plans to build on the city’s momentum and drive its continued growth.

A New Era for Ralston

Starting January 2, 2025, Jack Cheloha will take on the responsibilities of city administrator for Ralston, a growing suburban city with a population of around 6,500 residents. Cheloha, who has worked extensively in city government and with the Nebraska Legislature, replaces Rick Hoppe, who recently moved to become the chief of staff for Lincoln’s mayor, Leirion Gaylor Baird.

Cheloha’s appointment marks a new chapter for Ralston, a city that is quickly transforming due to ongoing economic development projects and infrastructure investments. Cheloha, a seasoned professional with a deep understanding of both large-city and small-town governance, said he is excited for the new challenges ahead and eager to help guide the community forward.

Cheloha’s Background and Transition to Ralston

Cheloha brings decades of experience to his new position. Having served as a lobbyist for the City of Omaha for over 30 years, Cheloha is well-versed in the workings of local government and its interactions with the state legislature. His previous role as a deputy city attorney in Omaha further broadened his understanding of city governance, giving him a unique perspective on both large urban areas and smaller, tight-knit communities like Ralston.

Though Cheloha has spent much of his career working in Omaha, he has a personal connection to Nebraska’s small towns. Growing up in Columbus, Nebraska, he has a strong sense of the values and dynamics that define smaller communities. He believes his broad experience will be a valuable asset as Ralston continues to grow and evolve.

In his new role, Cheloha plans to use his knowledge of both Omaha’s urban development and the needs of smaller communities to continue the progress Ralston has made in recent years. His excitement for the position is evident as he looks forward to helping lead the city into a new phase of growth and development.

Ralston’s Growing Infrastructure and Economic Development

Ralston’s transformation is well underway, thanks in large part to the Hinge Economic Development project, which has been a cornerstone of the city’s plans since its announcement in 2020. The project focuses on expanding housing, improving infrastructure, and attracting new businesses to the city.

One of the key elements of the Hinge project is the revitalization of the Granary site near Main and 74th Streets. This redevelopment is already bringing new businesses to the area, as well as an outdoor concert space that will serve as a hub for community events and gatherings. The area around Bushwackers has become a focal point of the city’s development, helping to create a vibrant, thriving community space for Ralston residents.

Cheloha believes that Ralston’s development is just beginning. With an eye on continued economic growth, he sees great potential in the city’s infrastructure projects, including investments in streets, sewers, and public safety. Additionally, Cheloha is hopeful that Ralston will secure a state-certified “Creative District” designation, which would open the door to additional state funding and further economic opportunities for the city.

The Future of Ralston Under Cheloha’s Leadership

As Cheloha steps into his new role, the future of Ralston looks promising. His deep ties to Omaha, coupled with his understanding of the dynamics of small-town Nebraska, provide him with the unique skills needed to foster Ralston’s continued growth. From new housing developments to more commerce opportunities, Cheloha envisions a prosperous future for the city.

Ralston’s Liberty First Credit Union Arena, which opened in 2012, has already shown signs of financial stability, and Cheloha is optimistic about its role in the city’s economic future. He foresees opportunities for more affordable housing, further business development, and potentially a growing arts scene with the Creative District initiative.

“Jack is the right choice to keep Ralston moving forward,” said Mayor Don Groesser, highlighting Cheloha’s extensive public service background and his readiness to take on the challenges ahead.

With a strong leader like Cheloha at the helm, Ralston’s future looks bright, and residents can expect continued growth, development, and a thriving community.
