Exclusive: Fire at Shiprocket’s Warehouse Impacts Over 60 Brands

A devastating fire that broke out last Thursday at Shiprocket’s warehouse in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, has caused extensive damage, disrupting operations for over 60 brands. The blaze, which destroyed goods worth several hundred crores, has raised significant concerns about safety protocols and supply chain disruptions.

A Widespread Impact

The fire affected at least 61 brands, including well-known names like Sugar, mCaffeine, and Beastlive. Sources familiar with the incident told Entrackr that the loss of inventory has caused a ripple effect, throwing supply chains into disarray for many of these businesses. The fire’s impact extends beyond the immediate damage, raising alarm bells about the vulnerability of third-party warehousing operations.

While Shiprocket confirmed the incident, it did not publicly disclose the names of the affected brands. According to a company spokesperson, Shiprocket is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities and fire departments as they investigate the cause of the blaze. The company expressed relief that no lives were lost, noting that human safety was not compromised.

The spokesperson also shared that the company’s primary focus now is to understand the circumstances that led to the incident and to take steps to enhance the safety and efficiency of its operations moving forward. Shiprocket’s immediate priority is to resume services and ensure continuity for its customers.

A Growing Concern for E-commerce Fulfillment

This incident highlights the growing concerns surrounding the safety and reliability of third-party logistics and warehousing services, especially as more businesses opt for outsourced solutions to handle fulfillment. With the rising popularity of e-commerce, more companies are turning to third-party services like Shiprocket to manage their warehousing and delivery operations. The fire at Shiprocket’s warehouse brings into sharp focus the potential risks that come with such reliance.

As businesses increasingly depend on external partners for supply chain management, incidents like these have made many reevaluate their safety protocols and contingency plans. Many of the affected brands are now facing serious disruptions in their operations, forcing them to find alternative solutions while dealing with the aftermath of the fire.

Shiprocket’s Response and Plans Moving Forward

Shiprocket has vowed to prioritize the safety of its team, partners, and customers in the wake of the disaster. The company’s focus is now on resuming operations swiftly while ensuring that such incidents do not happen again. “We are committed to servicing our customers and ensuring business continuity for them,” the spokesperson said.

Shiprocket, which was founded by Saahil Goel, Gautam Kapoor, and Vishesh Khurana, has grown to become a significant player in the logistics and supply chain sector. The company claims to empower over 1.5 lakh active businesses and is responsible for enabling 5% of India’s e-commerce.

A Unicorn in the Logistics Space

Shiprocket’s growth trajectory has been impressive, with the company becoming a unicorn in August 2022, backed by significant investors including Zomato. In October 2023, the company raised $11 million from McKinsey, further solidifying its position in the logistics and supply chain sector. For the fiscal year ending in March 2024, Shiprocket reported a 21% year-on-year growth in operating revenue, reaching Rs 1,316 crore.

Despite the recent setback, Shiprocket’s leadership has shown resilience, focusing on the long-term goal of improving operational safety and strengthening its supply chain capabilities.
